Stocking Fillers & Secret Santa Gifts She'll Actually Keep
There is a particular category of Christmas present that gets opened, admired for four seconds and never seen again. Novelty socks. A mug with a slogan. Bath things in a cellophane bag.
The difficulty with stocking fillers and Secret Santa is the budget. Under about £15 the options thin out quickly, and under £30 you are usually choosing between something mass-produced and something well-meant but useless.
Here is our honest case for a handmade scrunchie, and then some thoughts on choosing one that suits the person rather than the price bracket.
Why it works as a small gift
It gets used. Not admired — used. Most days, in fact. That is a rare quality in a present under £40.
It is not obviously a "filler". A silk velvet scrunchie in a hand-crafted gift box does not read as something grabbed at the last minute, because it wasn't.
It suits almost anybody with hair, which removes the hardest part of Secret Santa: buying for somebody you know slightly.
It arrives ready. Ours come in a gift box, so there is no wrapping to do at eleven o'clock on Christmas Eve.
Choosing by person, not by price
For someone with a lot of hair — the XL, always. It is the difference between a present she uses and one that lives in a drawer because it will not hold. → Oversized scrunchies
For someone quite glamorous — velvet. It has a depth of colour nothing else manages, and it is at its best in December. A crimson or a deep green under Christmas lights is a very good look. → Velvet
For someone practical — a printed cotton. It washes without ceremony, grips better than satin, and the prints are ones you will not see elsewhere. → Cotton
For someone who sleeps badly on her hair — satin. The one genuinely functional choice: less friction overnight means less of a kink in the morning. → Satin
For someone who has everything — one of the limited pieces. The Opera Scrunchie exists twelve times and will never exist again, because that was the length of cloth. There is a certain pleasure in giving something that cannot be reordered.
Secret Santa, specifically
Most Secret Santa budgets sit between £10 and £25, which is precisely the range where thoughtfulness is hardest.
Our regular size sits at the top of that bracket. What it buys you is something handmade in Britain rather than something shipped in bulk — and the practical advantage that it does not require knowing the recipient's size, taste in scent, or shoe size.
If you are buying for several people — a team, a family, a bridal party — do get in touch. We can put together a set in matching or complementary fabrics, and it is easier for everybody than eight separate orders.
Ordering in time
We make everything by hand, one piece at a time, so December is our busiest month by a distance.
- Standard orders — please allow a few days for making, plus postage
- Bespoke pieces — please allow four weeks. Custom colours, sizes, or contrast
piping, as we did for the customer who asked for a ruby velvet scrunchie with crimson piping.
- Sets for several people — do ask early in November if you can
Free UK shipping over £150, which a set will usually reach.
A note on where they come from
Everything is cut and sewn by hand in a small studio in West London, next door to Goldhawk Road, where the fabric shops that supply the London fashion schools have traded for decades. Most pieces begin as the end of a bolt — two metres of silk velvet, a length of gold brocade — which is why the collection changes constantly and why some things genuinely cannot be repeated.
It is a small thing to give someone. But it is a small thing that a person made, which is not nothing in December.
